Testing the Velvet WiFi Hotshot signal strength I received my Velvet Hotshot device last year and did an initial review of it. Around the same time I also collected some data on signal strength for the device but didn't have time to really look into it or write about it due to an extended period of travel. Now I've finally got around to looking at the results, so lets see how well the Hotshot stacks up.
Getting started with Velvet WiFi (part 1) Velvet Wi-Fi has been in the news in Australia as well as in the UK and has been referred to as Uber for Telcos. This startup has come out of Brisbane, which is my home town so it got my interest. Even though the legality of reselling your broadband is a bit of a grey area with many Telcos explicitly prohibiting the practice, I was still keen to see how well the service works.
The Qantas Entertainment app is awesome and you should use it I was lucky enough to be able to try out the Qantas Entertainment app on my flight this week and I am very impressed. This app is available on some Qantas flights and what it does is replace the plane's entertainment system by allowing you to watch all the offered movies, shows and even listen to radio or music directly on your own device. I downloaded it on my (quite old) iPad Mini and it worked like a charm.
TPG FTTB VDSL is as fast as they claim About 6 months ago I had an expression of interest letter arrive in the mail from TPG asking if I would be interested in having a FTTB connection set up in my apartment complex. I replied saying yes. As soon it was available, I signed up for their plan. The plan costs $69.99 and is advertised as unlimited with 50-100Mbps download speeds and 20Mbps upload speeds. Sounded good to me, but I was still a bit skeptical.
Stop the iPhone WiFi hotspot from starting automatically when plugged into a Mac via USB The Handoff features were introduced with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. One of those features is to automatically start the WiFi hotspot on your iDevice as needed. This feature can be great in some circumstances, but in others it can be a downright pain. I found that plugging your iPhone into a Mac causes the hotspot to start by default, that's not needed nor desired in my case, so here are a few steps on how to disable that feature.
Free Telstra WiFi appearing around the Brisbane CBD I've noticed that the long announced free Telstra WiFi hotspots have appeared around the Brisbane CBD. Maybe I've missed these all the other times while I was in the city centre, but now I can see them on the public phone boxes around the city.
