I've received a curious email this morning for my other blog's (300 George Street Blogumentary) catch-all email address. The title was all in Arabic and came from 24Option Team. At first I thought it was a typical kind of spam email, but decided to have a look and found that it contained a username and a password for 24Option.

Here's what the email looked like (original and then a translated version).

I didn't know what 24Option was so Googled it. I was immediately presented with dozens of hits all along the lines of 'is 24 Option a scam?' Many of the reviews I read were adamant in saying that it was not indeed a scam. However many of these reviews were on quite questionable sites themselves so I didn't quite believe any of it.

Still I wanted to see if that username and password worked. They did! I was able to log in and change the password. I also contacted their customer support via live chat and asked how and when this account was created because I certainly didn't do it. At first they told me that the account doesn't exist! That was odd because I was logged into it!

After some further searching they tracked down the account as having been created in...surprise surprise...UAE. Explains all the Arabic.

I asked to have the account terminated and they complied.

So I'm still not sure if it was some kind of elaborate scam to have me signed up or if it was some random person signing up a random email address, but my gut feeling is 24Option is a shady business and I wouldn't go near it.

At the same time I disabled the catch-all email on my domain.
